Our Approach
Component Earth is a carbon finance company that partners with experienced implementation organizations to bring early stage carbon projects from concept to scale. We combine deep carbon market expertise with investment capital and collaborative partnership to address a critical funding gap: investment that covers feasibility, pilots, and early implementation.
Nature restoration projects tend to take several years to go from initial capital deployment and implementation to first credit issuance. That timeline requires partners who understand the market and development reality deeply, can structure deals creatively, and provide active support across the full project development lifecycle.
How We Partner
We prioritize projects that can achieve the greatest impact across climate, nature, and communities alongside attractive financial returns, focusing on nature restoration and land-use interventions in emerging markets. Our partners are experienced local operators and NGOs with demonstrated implementation capacity and established community relationships who are building high quality carbon projects. Component Earth does not do on-the-ground implementation work; our partners do.
What Component Earth contributes
- Early stage capital during the earliest development phases when financing is hardest to raise, but most needed
- Project design and methodology advisory, including standards alignment, benefit-sharing frameworks, and stakeholder engagement
- Performance and outcome monitoring combining remote sensing and geospatial analysis with in-person site visits
- MRV technology integration through partnerships with leading dMRV, biomass estimation, and bioacoustics monitoring technology providers across our portfolio
- Investment structuring and financial modeling across equity, debt, and prepayment instruments, drawing on our own capital and our experience executing these deals
- Credit sales, carbon market intelligence and access through a globally diversified network of buyers and intermediaries
Through our decades of combined experience in carbon markets, project design and implementation, and development work in emerging markets, we have intimate knowledge of the challenges of project development and implementation. We support partners through the full project development lifecycle, including capacity building, measurement and evaluation, training, and crisis management as trusted partners rather than passive investors.
What We Measure
To us, while carbon is the primary driver of financial returns, environmental and social outcomes are equally important and integral to our process. Our monitoring framework includes:
- Geospatial and remote sensing analysis tracking various carbon project metrics, such as biomass, canopy cover, reversal risk, leakage
- Dynamic baselining through dMRV
- Bioacoustic monitoring using distributed soundscapes leveraging AI-powered species identification to track biodiversity impacts
- In-person site visits to monitor implementation activities, community engagement and benefits distribution, and direct stakeholder engagement
We layer remote and on-the-ground monitoring activities to build robust quantitative and qualitative understanding of the project that facilitates relationships with our projects and their communities and to provide the transparency that today’s carbon market demands.
How We Invest
We invest catalytic, early stage capital to fund initial development work alongside the project implementation partner, typically structured as equity in a project-level entity. Our capital funds the earliest and riskiest stages of project development from feasibility and carbon modeling to PDD development, validation, pilots, and initial stages of project implementation. This is the period when financing is hardest to secure, and where we believe we add the most value.
Once the project has reached certain project maturity milestones, we work alongside our implementation partners to structure the follow-on financing needed to complete the project. Component Earth typically remains invested in the project as long term partners and trusted advisors.
Case Study
Working with our longtime partners at Trees for the Future, we demonstrated our investment model in practice. In the Lake Victoria region of Western Kenya, we are transforming 35,000 hectares of smallholder farmland growing traditional maize and beans monocultures into biodiverse, productive, resilient agroforestry systems.
The program has been recognized as a UN World Restoration Flagship and is currently validated under VM0042, transitioning to Verra’s VM0047 methodology to incorporate dynamic baselining. After significant upfront funding and years of advisory work from Component Earth and critical implementation work by Trees for the Future, we partnered with Trafigura to bring in significant capital to realize the project’s full potential.
Work with us
We are looking for mission aligned partners who share our conviction in the transformative power of carbon markets.
